Kimhak is a four-year-old preschooler living with his parents in a rural village in Kampong Speu province in Cambodia. Both his mother and father work as rice farmers.
Kimhak was born with a small mass called a thyroglossal cyst. This type of fibrous cyst results when cells and tissues are left over after the formation of the thyroid gland while the fetus is still developing. It often goes unnoticed for years and is asymptomatic. However, Kimhak’s mass has grown in size, causing him discomfort. If the cyst is left untreated, it could become infected or rupture.
Kimhak and his parents traveled to our medical partner’s care center for treatment. On April 26th, surgeons at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre will remove the mass. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, is seeking your help to raise $273 to fund this procedure.
After surgery, Kimhak’s family hopes that he will feel better and that he will return to school.

Kimhak underwent the removal of a cyst.
Kimhak and his parents embarked on a two-and-a-half-hour taxi ride along muddy roads to Phnom Penh to have the mass on his neck removed. While most congenital thyroglossal duct cysts do not pose serious medical issues, there is a rare possibility of them turning cancerous. If left untreated, they could cause ongoing difficulties with swallowing and potentially obstruct his airway. Kimhak’s parents are relieved that he has been successfully treated. They will closely monitor the surgical site for any signs of infection and seek medical attention if he develops a fever or experiences persistent pain despite medication. Kimhak can now look forward to a full and active childhood with no recurrence of the condition.
Kimhak’s mother said: “I am so thankful that my son was able to receive this treatment. We don’t have to worry about problems anymore, and he can start school like other children.”
