Oscar is a 28-year-old married man from a village in Lilongwe District in Malawi. He has a young child who is not yet of school age, and relies on small-scale farming to support the family by growing maize, groundnuts, and keeping livestock. One year ago, Oscar noticed an itch in his throat and a slight hoarseness in his voice, initially thinking he was developing a cough. However, he later discovered a small painful swelling that has been gradually getting larger. He did not seek medical help as he had no funds to pay for treatment until his mother heard about a care program when she visited our medical partner care center, Nkhoma Hospital. Oscar was diagnosed with goiter, and was scheduled to undergo thyroidectomy surgery. The condition has negatively affected his life as the swelling is painful and sometimes, he experiences shortness of breath. Treatment will relieve him of these symptoms, improving the quality of his life. Fortunately, our medical partner African Mission Healthcare is helping Oscar receive treatment at their care center. On March 7th surgeons will perform thyroid surgery so he can regain his health. Now, he needs help to fund this $491 procedure. Damaris is a 48-year-old mother from Kenya. She resides in Ngarariga, in Kiambu County, with her husband and three children. Damaris is a homemaker, and her husband sells assorted items in Limuru. Their income is sufficient to pay for food and their children's education. For two years, Damaris has been experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding and cramping, this worsened in December 2023. It has worsened to the point of making caring for her children difficult and she is unable to socialize with her community. Damari went to the district hospital where she was diagnosed with fibroids of the uterus. The physicians recommend a hysterectomy, a surgery to remove the uterus. If this condition is not treated, she could develop severe anemia and the fibroids may eventually become cancerous. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $718 to fund Damaris's surgery. On February 27th, she will undergo a hysterectomy at our medical partner's care center. Once recovered, Damaris will be able to resume her previous activities and care for her children. “I have no words to explain how I am suffering with this bleeding. I humbly request help so that I can get back to my normal life and be able to take care of my family,” said Damaris.

11-year-old Ryan lives with his mother and three siblings in Malawi. His parents are separated, and the family depends on Ryan's mother - who sells vegetables - to support their family financially. Since he was born, Ryan has been experiencing a painful swelling in a sensitive area. The swelling disappears for periods of time, but is followed by abdominal pain and fever. His mother has taken him to different health centers, where he was given medication, which didn't ultimately help. Finally, he was seen by a surgeon who was conducting a free clinic at their nearby health center who diagnosed Ryan with a left inguinal hernia. Ryan is now scheduled to undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center Nkhoma Hospital on February 7th. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is seeking your help to raise the $421 needed to fund his procedure, without which Ryan will be unable to continue his schooling without interruption, and he'll continue to face potential health complications. Ryan’s mother says: “I am looking forward to seeing my son free of this condition so that he can focus on school.”
