Brimin underwent corrective surgery for his birth condition.

Three-year-old Brimin underwent a successful hypospadias surgery to correct his birth condition. Brimin no longer experiences pain and remained in the hospital for some more days for management of the wound. He will come back for follow-up visits to assess his recovery progress. Brimin will also require second-stage repair to fully heal in 6-12 months.

Brimin’s mother says as she cried tears of joy after the surgery, “My son is doing very well with no issues. I have overcome all tensions and worries which I had in the past.” She is very happy that her sons are okay now as his brother also underwent treatment with Watsi support. Both brothers have a brighter future ahead of them with more possibilities than before. Their mother is grateful to the team of surgeons who had operated on her sons.

Brimin is a cheerful three year old boy from Kenya, and he is in pre-kindergarten. Brimin is the youngest of three. His father works as a public transit driver to provide for the family while their mother earns wages from the grocery business to compliment her husband’s earnings. The family lives in a two-roomed iron built rental house.

Brimin was born with hypospadias, a congenital abnormality that causes urinary dysfunction. Without treatment, he will continue to experience uncomfortable symptoms and will be at risk of infertility. Brimin’s elder brother has a similar condition, and their mother is very worried about both her sons future and the obstacles they would face.

Fortunately, Brimin is scheduled to undergo corrective surgery on June 19th. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $631 to cover the total cost of his procedure and care.

Brimin’s mother says, “I want my child to grow up like other children.”

What kinds of symptoms do patients experience before receiving treatment?

Hypospadias is a congenital defect in which the opening of the urethra is on the underside of the penis. The urethra is the tube that drains urine from the bladder. In males, the opening of the urethra is normally at the end of the penis. Symptoms of hypospadias vary. This condition may cause genital malformation and urinary dysfunction. It can lead to infections, social stigma, and infertility.

What is the impact on patients’ lives of living with these conditions?

If this condition is not repaired, it can lead to urinary dysfunction, genital malformation, infertility, and increased risk of urinary tract infections.

What cultural or regional factors affect the treatment of these conditions?

Hypospadias is one of the most common birth defects in boys. It is the most frequent congenital urological anomaly, occurring in 1–3 per 1,000 live births.

What does the treatment process look like?

After surgery, the patient is monitored closely and discharged from the hospital after five days. Stitches will be removed during a follow-up appointment.

What is the impact of this treatment on the patient’s life?

The urethra will be corrected, improving urinary function.

What potential side effects or risks come with this treatment?

This is a low-risk procedure, and the impact of this surgery lasts a lifetime. If the patient has complicated hypospadias, he may need to undergo further surgery. Follow-up visits with a urologist may also be needed, particularly when patients reach puberty.

How accessible is treatment in the area? What is the typical journey like for a patient to receive care?

There are few quality care centers in the region. Hospitals lack adequate resources and expertise to treat this condition.

What are the alternatives to this treatment?

Surgery is not required for mild cases. Otherwise, there is no alternative.
