Meet Chea, a 64-year-old man from Cambodia. He is married with two sons, three daughters, and more than ten grandchildren. He enjoys visiting the pagoda and listening to monks pray.
Three months ago, Chea developed mature cataracts in each eye. A cataract occurs when a thin, cloudy layer forms over the eye’s lens. This causes him blurred vision, discharge, tearing, and fear of bright lights. It is hard for him to see clearly, do work, or go anywhere outside.
“I hope my eye can see everything clearly again,” shares Chea, “Then, I can go anywhere outside.”
After learning about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), Chea and his wife traveled three hours to visit their clinic. They learned that a simple surgical procedure may restore Chea’s sight.
On October 24, Chea underwent cataract surgery, during which his old lenses were removed and replaced with sheer artificial implants. He needs help to fund this $292 procedure.

Chea underwent successful cataract surgery.
Chea’s eye cataract was successfully removed from his left eye, and clear vision has been restored. Following the operation, he was given eye drops to reduce inflammation.
Chea returned home after surgery, and he has not returned for the same treatment in his right eye. Returning to the clinic can be difficult for patients, as it requires them to take time off work and travel with a family escort. Now that vision has been restored to one eye, however, the second surgery is less urgent than the first. Treatment will be free whenever Chea returns.
“I feel very happy that I can see better than before,” he says. “I can continue my work as a farmer and go to the pagoda by myself.”
