Chhun is married with five sons, four daughters, and nine grandchildren. She is a 61-year-old rice and crop farmer. Chhun traveled three hours with her daughter to reach Watsi’s medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), for treatment.
Chhun developed a cataract in each eye one year ago. This causes her blurred vision, irritation, and pain.
Cataracts cause the lens of the eye to become cloudy. Because of this, Chhun can’t see clearly, do work well, or get around easily on her own.
After a small incision cataract surgery (SICS) and intraocular lens (IOL) implant in each eye, Chhun will be able to see clearly again. $225 will cover the cost of the surgery, the center’s operating costs, supplies, and three days in the hospital.
In her free time, Chhun enjoys watching Thai and Khmer dramas on TV. After the procedure, Chhun hopes to go back to work.

Chhun underwent vision-restoring cataract surgery.
Chhun had the cataract in her right eye successfully removed in a short operation, during which her clouded lens was taken out and replaced with a clear synthetic implant. The surgery went very well, and already she can see much more clearly than before. With her restored vision, Chhun looks forward to returning to work on her farm, something she’d been unable to do due to her blurred vision and aversion to sunlight.
Though she was scheduled to have cataracts removed from both of her eyes, Chhun has not returned to receive the second surgery.
For any number of reasons, it can often take patients some time to return for follow-up care. Patients frequently live far away or have family matters arise that prevent them from coming back to the clinic. When Chhun returns, the surgery to remove her other cataract will be free.
