Srey Noun is a 12-year-old girl from Cambodia. She has one older brother who works in a garment factory and a younger sister who is four years old. Her mother works as a hotel cleaner in the city and Srey Noun goes to school and lives in the province with her rice farmer grandmother.
Srey Noun enjoys exercising, playing with toys with her sister, and watching TV. At school, her best subject is math and she wants to be a pharmacist when she grows up.
When Srey Noun was 10, she was diagnosed with scoliosis and underwent her first expanding rod procedure. Now she needs another rod distraction procedure to straighten her spine as she grows.
Fortunately, surgeons at Children’s Surgical Centre can perform the surgery. Srey Noun needs $1,500 to fund the procedure.
Srey Noun’s mother says, “I hope after surgery she can feel well and return to school.”

Srey Noun underwent back surgery to heal her scoliosis.
After Srey’s surgery, she remained on bed rest with pain medication as needed. This surgery was important to control the curve of her spine while allowing further spinal growth.
The following day, she started working with the physical therapy team to stand and walk short distances with assistance. Her love for reading will help keep her busy as she recovers. She will avoid any heavy lifting, bending, running, or jumping for several months until she sees the surgeons again for her post-op visit. Srey will be able to grow without the spinal deformation inhibiting her growth or her breathing, although she will need further surgery to expand the spinal rods as she grows taller.
She can return to life as an active young girl and resume her favorite activities within 4 to 6 months. She hopes to attain her dream of becoming a pharmacist.
Srey’s grandmother said: “We are hopeful Srey’s spine surgery will help her grow correctly, and she will look like other children and have a normal life. I am grateful to the CSC staff and the people who paid for her operation; we would not have been able to afford this care.”
