Loeum is a 65-year-old rice farmer. He is married with one son, one daughter, and three grandchildren. Loeum lives with his family who are all farmers. At home he likes to listen to the news on the radio.
One year ago, Loeum developed a cataract in his right eye, causing him photophobia, itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside.
When Loeum learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, he traveled for eight hours seeking treatment. On November 3rd, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his right eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $229 procedure.
Loeum says, “I hope my eye can see well again. I want to be able to go back to planting rice.”

Loeum underwent cataract surgery so he can see clearly again.
Loeum traveled for many hours on difficult roads from his rural province to have his cataract surgery. When he opened his eyes after surgery, he was thrilled at the immediate improvement and gave everyone a big smile. His vision will continue to improve and now his life will be better because he can return to the fields to help his family with the crops.
Loem’s wife said: “We are so pleased that Loeum can see better. He feels more useful and independent, and much happier. Thank you to all the people who helped.”
