Maria is a 38-year-old weaver from Guatemala. She lives with her parents and three siblings. She helps her siblings take care of their kids since she is unable to have any of her own. She enjoys playing with her nieces and nephews, and weaving traditional Mayan blouses to help her family pay for basic necessities.
Maria has been suffering from excruciating lower abdominal pain for many years. Fibroids in her uterus are continuously growing. Recently, she has had trouble working and helping around the house because her pain is so severe.
When she went to a doctor in the local government-run health outpost, they told her she would be unable to have children and that there was nothing they could do for her pain. Wuqu’ Kawoq’s medical team first saw her at one of their community clinics, and have connected her to skilled surgeons in Guatemala City. They have determined that she is a great candidate for surgery. Treatment will stop her from experiencing severe pain and discomfort for the rest of her life.
Surgical treatment via hysterectomy will remove her uterus and the painful fibroids that have made her life extremely uncomfortable for the past several years. She will be able to help around the house, play with her nieces and nephews, and continue weaving without having severe pain. This treatment will change her life!
Maya says, “I want to be cured so that I no longer have pain and I can live a long time for my family.”
