Makara is a 37-year-old who is married with a son and a daughter. His wife stays home and his children are both in school. In his free time, he likes to play football with his friends and help his children with their homework.
Eight years ago, Makara developed a pterygium in his right eye, causing him itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. Pterygiums are non-cancerous growths of the conjunctiva, a mucous layer that lubricates the eye. The growths occur when the conjunctiva is exposed to excessive sun damage and the cells grow abnormally over the pupil.
When Makara learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, he traveled there hoping to finally undergo treatment. On February 28th, he will undergo a surgical procedure to remove the abnormal conjunctiva from the cornea surface and replace it with a conjunctival graft to prevent recurrence. The total cost of his procedure is $216, which covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care for two days.
Makara shared, “my eye looks bad and I don’t like when people stare at my eye. I hope after surgery my eye will stop being red and burning all the time.”
