Guerby is an 18-year-old student, living in the mountains outside of Gressier in Haiti. Seven years ago, Guerby contracted rheumatic fever that infected his heart, severely damaging two of his heart valves. These valves can no longer adequately pump blood to his body, causing him to feel extremely weak. He requires a surgery to replace his damaged valves with new, artificial valves.
$1,500 will provide Guerby with the exams, care, and transportation he needs to be able to have heart surgery. The heart surgery itself has been subsidized by Heart Hospital Baylor Plano, a Watsi care center.
Both of Guerby’s parents passed away in the 2010 earthquake, and he now stays with neighbors and relatives who help take care of him. Guerby shared, “I am very excited for my surgery so I can be active again and can start playing sports.” He says he would also like to study to become an engineer.

Guerby underwent successful heart surgery.
During surgery, Guerby’s damaged heart valve was removed, and a new, artificial valve was implanted. His heart now functions more normally, and blood can circulate throughout his body more easily. Although Guerby will need lifelong medications and blood tests to manage his artificial valve, he should be able to lead a near-normal life. He is pictured here with the American doctors in Haiti who will be monitoring his condition.
“I want to say thank you to everyone in the hospital who was so nice to me, and also to everyone who helped me get my surgery,” says Guerby. “I feel much better now!””
