Maria is a former secretary and mother of two from Guatemala. She has been a widow for the past thirty years and lives in her own apartment. Her children are both grown, and she has four grandchildren. She now spends much of her time taking care of her grandchildren and weaving.
Maria has cataracts, a condition in which the normally clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy. Her condition makes it difficult for her to see, and her vision is becoming worse over time. If left untreated, the cataracts will continue to grow and eventually cause her to go blind. Thus, our medical partner is recommending surgery, which is scheduled for March 4.
To fund the surgery, our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, is requesting $1,500. The treatment will include further evaluation from an eye specialist, surgery to remove the cataracts, a post-op follow-up treatment, and transportation throughout the treatment process.
The surgery will positively impact Maria’s life for years to come by allowing her to weave, earn an income, and see her grandkids grow up.
“I appreciate the opportunity that you are giving me to have the surgery, since I don’t have the resources for it,” says Maria. “Once I can see, I will keep weaving, I will keep working without difficulty, and I will be with my children through the good and the bad.”
