Tukahirwa is married and a mother of seven children: one is a primary teacher, the other finished a journalism course but has not been employed due to the scarcity of jobs, two are still in school, and the rest are married. She is a small-scale farmer in rural Uganda and her husband is a catechist along with doing some farming alongside her.
Fifteen years ago, Tukahirwa began to experience troubling symptoms, including difficulty breathing, swallowing and disfigurement. She was diagnosed with a goiter, an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. She needs surgery to prevent her symptoms from getting worse.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is helping Tukahirwa receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on May 12th at our medical partner’s care center. Surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. This procedure will cost $264, and she and her family need help raising money.
Tukahirwa says: “I look forward to having a successful surgery since the doctor told me that I am now fit and healthy for the surgery.”
