“Farming is the sole source of food and income for our family,” shares Mufumu, a man from Uganda. “After my surgery, I will finally be able to farm again.”
At 75, Mufumu is still working hard. He and his wife are trying to put their youngest son through plumbing school so that their family can someday get beyond subsistence living. Mufumu has a banana plantation whose crops they use to feed their family and to sell.
At the beginning of this year, Mufumu noticed a swelling in his right groin region. It causes him pain, especially after work. He has been using herbs to try to dull the pain, but they have not helped much. He shared his condition with a friend who works at Virika Hospital, and was advised to come to Virika for a checkup.
Doctors at the medical center diagnosed Mufumu with a right inguinal hernia. In addition to causing discomfort, the hernia could damage Mufumu’s bowel by twisting and blocking his intestines.
To avoid these potentially deadly outcomes, Mufumu needs to undergo hernia repair surgery on October 18. Although he and his wife cannot afford to pay for his operation, you can give them a hand. $249 will sponsor his procedure, as well as his medications, lab tests, and three-night hospital stay.
After surgery Mufumu hopes to resume farming with his wife in order to be able to pay for their son’s fees.
