Rachel is a two-year-old girl from rural Guatemala. Unfortunately, Rachel has already suffered from a litany of health-related problems, such as chronic malnutrition, strabismus, and developmental concerns. During one of Rachel’s therapy sessions to improve her physical development, Rachel’s therapists concluded that Rachel’s difficulties with walking are due in part to developmental abnormalities in her feet.
In order to correct her gait, Rachel needs an ankle-foot orthotic. This device will be molded to her legs and will be designed specifically to treat her foot disorder. It will provide a foundation of stable support for Rachel’s lower extremities and allow her to walk more easily and comfortably.
Rachel and her family continue to do all that they can for Rachel’s health and wellbeing. Our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, is requesting $378 to cover the cost of Rachel’s orthotic device, which she is scheduled to receive on May 9. Combined with her strong base of familial support, this device will help Rachel develop into a healthy, strong young girl.
Rachel’s mother says, “For all the things that have passed, my daughter’s life is a miracle. Now we are confronting another obstacle and it will continue to be a great struggle.”
