“Horn is married with four children and four grandchildren and spends much of her day listening to monks praying,” our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), tells us.
Horn has a mature cataract in her right eye. A cataract is a condition in which the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, causing the image seen to be blurred. Cataracts are very common in old age, created when protein clumps together and starts to cloud the lens. At this stage, the lens of Horn’s eye has completely clouded over.
CSC explains, “The cataracts in horn’s eye cause her some pain and make it hard for her to do work at the farm and in the house. She can’t cook very well and doesn’t like to go places by herself.”
With $150 in Watsi funding, Horn will receive cataract removal surgery. In this short procedure, doctors will remove the clouded lens of her eye and replace it with new, artificial lens. Funding will cover all the associated costs of the procedure: the surgery, her hospital stay, a caretaker, and medication.
When she has recovered from surgery, Horn’s vision will be restored. Horn is really looking forward to having the surgery completed and doing the things she enjoys again.
CSC tells us that, “after surgery, she would like to return to her job on the farm, bake Khmer cakes to sell and go to the pagoda with no assistance.”
