Esupat is an 11-year-old girl from Tanzania. She lives with her parents, grandparents, and six siblings. She enjoys helping around the house with different house chores like cooking, cleaning the house, washing dishes, and fetching water. Her father engages in local subsistence farming and livestock keeping. Her mother is a homemaker so the family depends on the father’s income for provision of basic needs. Esupat’s mother shared that it has been hard for their family the past two years because of drought, their cattle have been dying and farming has not been good.
When she was five years old, Esupat was helping her grandmother start a fire. The fire caught her cloth and ended up burning her neck and her chest. Her parents took her to a medical center near their home. After four months of treatment, she got better, and her wounds healed but left her with a burn scar contracture around her neck. She is having a hard time straightening her neck and has a limited range of motion. Her mother says that the treatment she requires is expensive and they won’t be able to pay for it so they are asking for help.
Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is helping Esupat receive treatment. On October 11th, surgeons at their care center will perform a burn contracture release surgery to help her move her neck easily. Now, her family needs help to fund this $639 procedure.
Esupat’s grandmother says, “I am hopeful now that my granddaughter is going to get better.”
