Meet Prakash, a 10-year-old boy from Nepal. “Prakash lives with his parents and two sisters. Being the youngest in the family, he is pampered by everyone,” says our medical partner, Possible.
“Prakash was playing on a rope swing when it broke. He landed on his left hand, which has been hurting since,” shares Possible. “Not only did he miss his school to come to the hospital, but he also needs help with his everyday activities like eating and getting dressed.”
Prakash has a broken hand and needs surgery for it to heal properly. Prakash’s mother and father work as farmers, though sometimes his father travels to India to work when there is not enough work on the farm. His father says, “I can’t afford coming to the hospital, let alone finance his treatment.”
For $579, Prakash will undergo open reduction and internal fixation surgery. The surgeon will insert metal hardware to fully stabilize the bone so that it can heal properly. Four to six weeks after the procedure, the bone should be healed and Prakash will begin physical therapy to recover the strength and mobility in his hand.
Prakash’s mother says, “I’m relieved that he will get treatment, otherwise he will not be able to do the activities that kids his age do.”
