Bo underwent tumor removal surgery.

Bo was brought to Chiang Mai Hospital in an ambulance and was admitted right away. He received pain medication and, after learning that his condition was cancerous, he also underwent additional treatment to help stop the cancer from spreading. Although his doctor tried to save his arm, in the end his medical team determined that it would be best to amputate his arm and limit the risk of his cancer spreading.

Before his surgery, Bo’s left shoulder and upper forearm were swollen and extremely painful. He could not use his left arm to lift or carry anything due to the pain. He had no appetite and could not sleep at night. He felt depressed and stressed due to the pain in his left arm and not being able to afford treatment. Since his surgery, Bo is no longer in pain. His appetite has returned and he is able to sleep at night. He is still adjusting to having only one arm, but he is able to wash his own clothes and go to the bathroom without help, which is a relief for him.

Bo said, “I felt so sad that I had to lose my left arm, but I also felt happy that I would no longer suffer from the pain anymore. I still feel like I have my left arm. My parents were very sad for me and worried about my condition. But now they feel happy that I have received successful surgery. Since I suffered from this condition, I lost a lot of weight. Now I have gained some weight and I feel happy. Thank you to all the donors and the organisation BCMF for supporting my surgery’s cost.”

Bo is a 16-year-old student. He’s in eighth grade and lives in the school dormitory in the Tak Province during the school year. His parents and his siblings live on the Thai-Burma border. His brother and his mother are day labourers while his father is retired. During his free time, he likes to play the guitar, cook, and garden.

In May 2021, Bo began to experience pain in the top of his left arm, close to his shoulder. In June 2021, the top of his left arm began to swell until it spread towards his shoulder. The swelling is now very large, encompassing his left shoulder and upper arm. Bo is in a lot of pain and cannot use his left arm. He cannot lift it, nor carry anything due to the pain and the swelling.

Bo sought treatment through our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund. Bo is now scheduled to undergo mass removal surgery on August 18th. He is requesting $1,500 to cover the total cost of his procedure and care.

“I want to become a policeman one day but I do not know if this will be possible,” said Bo.

Chit Htun

Chit Htun is a 21-year-old man from Burma who lives with his mother, two sisters and a brother. His mother is a homemaker, while Chit Htun and his siblings are students. They are supported financially by two aunties and Chit Htun's former teacher. Chit Htun was born with spina bifida as well as hydrocephalus. When Chit Htun was just over a month old, he had a shunt inserted in his brain to control hydrocephalus. In October 202, Chit Htun fell down the stairs in his home and hit his head during the fall. Since that time, he has been experiencing headaches and dizziness with occasional loss of consciousness. Chit Htun's mother brought him to a hospital in Yangon, where he received a CT scans showing that the original shunt was in place. A second shunt was inserted to help with the loss of consciousness, but the headaches and dizziness continued to be a problem. In October 2022, Chit Htun had a seizure, accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Chit Htun's mother brought him to Mae Sot Hospital, where he received a CT scan on November 28th, 2022 with the help of Burma Children Medical Fund (BCMF). The doctor diagnosed Chit Htun with severe chronic hydrocephalus and suspected shunt malfunction. BCMF is now fundraising $1,500 to help cover the cost of surgery to replace Chit Htun's current shunt. Chit Htun's mother shared, "My son and I have been in Mae Sot for the past two months and we are homesick already. I hope that he will receive surgery soon and recover from his symptoms."
