46-year-old Rathana is a tuk-tuk driver from a rural province in Cambodia. He now works in the capital of Phnom Penh, where he rents a traditional house with his wife and their two sons, ages 4 and 9. His wife works in a garment factory, and his children attend a nearby school. On April 5th, Rathana fell off his motorbike and lost consciousness. He was taken to a hospital on the outskirts of town, where he paid the equivalent of two months' wages for pain medications and routine tests. One month later, he noticed weakness in his left arm and hand, but he delayed seeking treatment due to a lack of funds. When Rathana finally sought the help of our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he was diagnosed with a brachial plexus injury to his left side. The brachial plexus is a nerve network that transmits signals from the spine to the shoulder, arm, and hand. Injuries to this nerve network can result in the loss of function and sensation. Currently, Rathana is unable to use his left hand, and he cannot work. On July 20th, Rathana will undergo brachial plexus repair surgery at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre, the only facility in Cambodia where this treatment is available. After recovery, he will be able to use his hand again, and to return to work. Children's Surgical Centre is requesting $709 to fund this procedure. After surgery, Rathana hopes that he can go back to work to support his family and do his every day activities.

Seng Heap is a 43-year-old primary school teacher from the Banteay Mean Chey province of Cambodia. Seng Heap lives with her husband who is also a teacher and they have one son who is currently in the sixth grade. When Seng Heap was seven, she had an ear infection. The infection caused a cholesteatoma, or abnormal skin growth, to develop in the middle ear behind the ear drum. Seng Heap experiences hearing loss, tinnitus, and frequent ear discharge in her right ear due to this cholesteatoma. Although Seng Heap visits a pharmacy for medicine when she experiences pain, she continues to get recurrent infections. Now, her symptoms cause Seng Heap to have difficulty sleeping, working, and communicating. She said that she finds it difficult to hear what other people are saying to her and is ashamed that she cannot communicate. Fortunately, our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), can help. On June 6th, Seng Heap with undergo a mastoidectomy procedure to help regain her hearing. During this procedure, ENT surgeons will remove the cholesteatoma that is causing her symptoms. CSC is requesting $926 to fund this procedure. This sum covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care. Seng Heap said, "I hope I will stop ear infections and improve my hearing after this operation"

Rose is a 55-year-old woman from Kiambu County, Kenya. She is married with three grown-up children. Rose and her husband make a living by doing whatever odd jobs they can find in their neighborhood. However, there are times when work is scarce, leaving them without enough to eat. For the past month, Rose has been experiencing severe heartburn, regurgitation, and epigastric pains that sometimes become unbearable. She sought help at several health centers, but unfortunately, the relief was elusive. Rose walked 8 kilometers to seek treatment at Nazareth's Comprehensive Care Clinic. At the Care Clinic, Rose and her husband reported her health issue to the nurses, who promptly referred her to a doctor. Following an abdominal scan, she was diagnosed with Cholelithiasis. Cholelithiasis, or gallstones, are hardened deposits of digestive fluid that can form in your gallbladder. If left untreated, Rose's condition will continue to cause her suffering, and she may face complications like bile duct obstruction and pancreatitis. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare (AMH), can help Rose. AMH's doctors recommended Rose undergo a laparotomy treatment surgery to alleviate her pain. On August 3rd, AMH's doctors will perform a laparotomy on Rose. However, given their financial struggles, Rose and her family are in dire need of assistance to afford the necessary treatment. AMH is now asking for $788 to help fund this procedure. Rose says “I have no one to turn to. My husband is the only one struggling at least to get casual work so that we can put food on the table. I need your help to run my everyday life well and at least assist my husband in running our family."
