Men is a 68-year-old retired rice farmer. She lives with her husband and one grandchild in a traditional raised stilt house in Kampong Thom province in Cambodia. Men and her husband have three sons, two daughters, and 11 grandchildren who live nearby. Her children support Men and her husband, as they are now too old to work in the rice paddies. At home, she likes to cook or go to the local temple to join religious ceremonies. Several years ago, Men developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her cloudy vision, tearing, and difficulty walking outside in bright or low sunlight. Due to these symptoms, Men is reluctant to go out on her own. Fortunately, our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On August 6th, doctors at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre will perform phacoemulsification cataract surgery, and implant an intraocular lens in Men's right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Men and her family are able to contribute $15 towards the cost of her treatment and need help raising $238 more to fund the procedure. Men says: "I hope that after the surgery, I will be able to see clearly again and recognize my grandchildren's faces."

Bunthoeun is an unemployed 34-year-old father of two from Cambodia. He lives with his parents, wife, and two daughers aged two years and ten years in Takéo Province. His wife sells snacks at a nearby high school, and his parents watch the children when they are home. Before the accident, Bunthoeun worked as a sales assistant at a motorbike shop. He also enjoys raising chickens around the house, a favorite hobby. In October 2023, Bunthoeun was in a motorbike accident and suffered right shoulder trauma. Following the accident, he received medical care at a hospital in Phnom Pen, but is presently unable to use his right arm. He has been diagnosed with a brachial plexus injury on his right side. The brachial plexus is a nerve network that transmits signals from the spine to the shoulder, arm, and hand. Injuries to this nerve network can result in loss of function and sensation. He experiences pain and is unable to lift his hand or shoulder, and he cannot work. Bunthoeun traveled to Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre to receive treatment. This is the only center in the whole country where this treatment is available. On June 18th, he will undergo a brachial plexus repair surgery. After recovery, he hopes to use his arm again. Bunthoeun is able to contribute $100 towards his medical care, but needs help raising the remaining $609 for the procedure. Bunthoeun says: "After recovery, I hope I can use my arm again and find a job to help support my family."

Va is a former construction worker from Kandal province, Cambodia. He is 64 years old and married with two daughters, three sons, and five grandchildren. His youngest son still lives at home and works for the same construction company that Va worked for before his retirement. Their other children live nearby, and visit often with the grandchildren. At home, Va enjoys caring for the garden, spending time with family, and watching boxing. Around two years ago, Va developed a cataract in his left eye, causing him itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, so it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so he is not able to go places on his own. When Va learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for two and a half hours seeking treatment. On May 28th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his left eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $253 procedure. Va shared, "I hope after surgery, I can see clearly again. Once my eye is better, I want to open a bicycle repair shop in front of my house so I can earn more money to support my family."
