This is Roeun, a 69-year-old grandmother from Cambodia. During her spare time, she enjoys listening to the monks praying at the local pagoda.
About five months ago, Roeun developed a cataract in each of her eyes. The protein build up in her eyes caused blurred vision and tearing. This condition often occurs due to aging and can lead to loss of vision if left untreated. Roeun traveled three hours with her niece to reach Watsi’s medical partner, Children’s Surgical Center, for treatment.
After a phaco procedure and intraocular implant in each eye, Roeun will be able to see clearly again. $292 in funding will allow Roeun to receive surgical intervention where a surgeon at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Center will remove Roeun’s clouded lens and replace it with a clear, artificial one.
After treatment, Rouen will be able to return to her grandchildren with excellent vision for many more years to enjoy with family and local monks.

Roeun can see clearly again.
Doctors at our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), removed the cataract from Roeun’s left eye. Clear vision has been restored. As she recovers, Roeun will use eye drops to reduce inflammation and fight infection.
Roeun returned home after surgery, and she has not returned for the same treatment in her right eye. Returning to the clinic can be difficult for patients, as it requires them to take time off work and travel with a family escort. Now that vision has been restored to one eye, however, the second surgery is less urgent than the first. Treatment will be free whenever Roeun returns.
“I feel very happy that I can see everything clearly again,” says Roeun. “I can now take care of my grandchildren easily and go anywhere on my own.”
Roeun’s niece, who accompanied her to surgery, adds, “I am very happy that my aunt can see clearly again. I don’t have to worry about her vision loss anymore. I am thankful to all staff at CSC that helped on her eye surgery.”
