Junior is a 43-year-old man from Haiti. He lives with his wife and three daughters and travels throughout the country for his work as an air-conditioning installation technician. Junior has a cardiac condition called rheumatic aortic regurgitation. One of the four valves of his heart no longer opens and closes properly as a result of an infection that he suffered earlier in his life. As a result, his heart can no longer adequately pump blood through his body, leaving him weak and short of breath. Junior will fly to the United States to receive treatment. On August 26th, he will undergo cardiac surgery, during which Surgeons will remove his damaged valve and implant an artificial replacement. Another organization, Baylor Scott and White Heart Hospital, is contributing $28,000 to pay for surgery. Junior's family also needs help to fund the costs of surgery prep. Our medical partner, International Cardiac Alliance, is requesting $1,500 to cover labs, medicines, and checkup and follow-up appointments. It also supports securing travel documents and supporting social workers from our medical partner, who will accompany Junior's family overseas. Junior says, "My entire family is so happy to know that there is a chance for my heart to be fixed."

Phol is a 61-year-old rice farmer from Kampong Cham province in Cambodia. He and his wife have two daughters, four sons, and ten grandchildren. Phol lives with his wife, who also works as a rice farmer. At home, he enjoys listening to the news on the radio, and spending time with his grandchildren. About three months ago, Phol developed a cataract in his left eye, causing him photophobia, itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, so it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so he is not able to go places on his own. When Phol learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On August 8th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his left eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Phol is able to contribute $100 towards the cost of his treatment and needs help raising $153 more to fund the procedure. Phol says, "I'm hopeful that after the surgery, I'll be able to see clearly again, allowing me to return to work and not feel afraid to go places on my own."

Meet Huoy, a 24-year-old man from Cambodia. He lives with his wife, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law in Pursat province. His wife is six months pregnant with their first child and stays home to help manage the household. In his free time, Huoy enjoys watching sports on TV with his friends at the village coffee shop. On July 26, 2024, Huoy was in a motorcycle accident, where he was hit from behind by a speeding car, falling hard on his right shoulder. He sustained multiple injuries including paralysis of his right arm due to nerve injuries. He sought treatment from a local clinic near his house but is unable to use his arm and hand. He has been diagnosed with a brachial plexus injury on his right side. The brachial plexus is a nerve network that transmits signals from the spine to the shoulder, arm, and hand. Injuries to this nerve network can result in loss of function and sensation. Huoy used to work as a cashier but has been unable to work since the traffic accident, and his arm is non-functional. He has shoulder pain and weakness in his right hand, and is unable to raise his arm. Huoy is worried he will not be able to support his family, especially after his first child is born. Huoy traveled to our medical partner's care center, Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre, to receive treatment. On September 12th, he will undergo a brachial plexus repair surgery. After recovery, he hopes to use his right arm again to work. Huoy is able to contribute $100 but needs help t raise $609 more to fund his treatment and care. Huoy says, "After this operation, I hope to use my arm again to find a job to help my family and take care of my wife and baby."
