Thouen is a 60-year-old woman living in Cambodia. She likes to listen to the news and the prayers of monks on the radio.
Three years ago, Thouen developed entropion of the eyelids, a condition in which the eyelids turn inward so that the eyelashes and skin rub against the surface of the eye. Because of the entropion, she experiences blurred vision and irritation. Thouen traveled with her niece to seek treatment with our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre.
Entropion is most commonly caused by weakness in the muscles under the eyes, and it is more common in older adults. Artificial tears and lubricating ointments can help relieve symptoms, but usually surgery is needed to fully correct the condition. Left untreated, entropion can cause cornea damage, eye infections, and vision loss.
On October 28, surgeons performed an entropion repair surgery to remove a small part of her lower eyelid. The total cost of the surgery, including medications, supplies, and three days of inpatient care, is $266.
After recovery, Thouen will be able to see clearly. “I hope…that I can do my work easily,” she shares.
