Befilina is a 32-year-old farmer living in Malawi. She lives with her sister and is a single mother to two young children. Befilina earns an income by sweeping, cooking, and farming. When she has some time to herself, she likes to sit and chat with her sister and her village friends.
In January 2017, Befilina started experiencing severe abdominal pain. She sought evaluation at a local hospital, and was diagnosed with uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids are small, benign tumors that are frequently found in women.
Befilina’s doctors recommended she have a hysterectomy, a surgery to remove her uterus and cervix, to eliminate the source of her pain. The total cost of the surgery is $650, and covers medication, supplies, and seven days of inpatient care. Her surgery is scheduled for April 25.
Befilina is eager to have her surgery, and her family is happy that she will eventually have a full return to health.
“Thank you, Watsi,” she says.
