Sambo is a 41-year-old moto-taxi driver. He and his wife - who works as a tailor - have two children, a son who is seven, and a daughter who is eight. When he isn’t working, Sambo likes to read books, watch TV, and look after his children.
In June 2021, Sambo sustained a burn to his left hand and elbow, as a result of a gasoline fire. His family took him to a clinic in Siem Reap Province for dressing changes and wound care. After a year, Sambo’s wound remains unhealed, and he has developed contractures in his elbow. He is in pain and unable to move his arm, due to the burn scars. The pain from the contractures - and his inability to move his arm - have made it difficult for Sambo to drive his moto-taxi, and to earn a living to provide for his family.
When Sambo learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, he traveled for six hours to seek treatment. On July 4th, surgeons at Kien Khleang Rehabilitation Centre will perform a burn contracture release surgery to eliminate the dead skin and the contracture, replacing it with a free flap. Once the surgery has been completed, Sambo will have full use of his arm, and he should be pain free. Now, he needs help to fund this $495 procedure.
Sambo said: “I hope my burn can finally be fixed. It has been very painful, and I am unable to work to support my family.”

Sambo underwent surgery on his arm.
Sambo had surgery to release his burn contractures and replace the damaged skin with a skin graft to reconstruct his burned hand. Sambo remained at the hospital for several dressing changes to make sure the graft was successful and took antibiotics to decrease the risk of re-infection. Once it was verified that his hand was healing properly, Sambo was able to return home. Sambo will work with the physiotherapy team for exercises to increase flexion and strengthen his hand once the the incision is healed. Sambo is excited that he will have full use of his hand again. It is important for him to return to work to support his family, and he is fortunate that this surgery will eventually allow him to do that.
Sambo’s wife shared, “We are grateful that my husband will be able to use his hand. He was very stressed that he was unable to work, and that he would lose face. Thank you to all who helped to pay for his surgery and the staff who helped him. This will make a big difference in his life.”
