B. Ageredech is a two-month-old baby from Ethiopia. His mother sells vegetables in their home area, and his father is a day laborer.
B. Ageredech was born with anorectal malformation, a birth defect in which the anus or the rectum fails to develop properly. As a result, B. Ageredech cannot pass stool normally. In addition, he has spina bifida and multiple issues with his colostomy care, such as leakage, irritation, and blockage. If not treated, B. Ageredech will continue to experience discomfort and may suffer infections at the colostomy site. The stigma and discrimination associated with B. Ageredech’s condition has been additionally psychologically taxing for his parents.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $1,500 to cover the cost of a colostomy and corrective surgery for B. Ageredech. The procedure is scheduled to take place on May 11 and, once completed, will hopefully allow B. Ageredech to live comfortably and confidently again.
“I have been in three hospitals before but couldn’t get the surgery. Now I am here with a hope to get my child the necessary treatment,” says B. Ageredech’s mother.
