Vireak is a 29-year-old factory worker from Cambodia. He lives with his wife, son, and daughter. In his free time, he likes to watch TV, listen to music, and look after his children.
In October 2014, Vireak was in a motorcycle accident that caused an injury to his left forearm. He went to a private clinic for treatment, but the injury did not heal. The pain has radiated down to his hand and has made it very difficult for him to work.
Surgeons at our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), will perform an open reduction internal fixation procedure in Vireak’s left arm. The procedure will realign the broken bone and allow his arm to heal properly. Vireak’s procedure is scheduled for February 15, and CSC is requesting $411 in funding.
Vireak is eager to be pain-free and to contribute at work and at home.

Vireak underwent fracture repair.
Vireak’s treatment for his left forearm and left hand went well. Surgeons at CSC removed the hardware that was fixated in Vireak’s previous treatment from the private clinic. A pin and plate were removed from his forearm. Then, they performed an osteotomy procedure of the proximal phalanx (the bone at the bottom of the finger) of his index finger to surgically cut the bone for realignment. Two cross pins were fixated for stabilization. Following the procedure, he was given pain medication, and a splint was applied to support his index finger.
Vireak had another procedure to re-do the fixation of his index finger. The pins were pulled out, and a microplate and screws were used instead. Following the procedure, he was given pain medication and antibiotics to take for five days. His wounds have healed nicely, and he does not experience pain. Vireak is now able to use his left arm and hand more easily than before.
Vireak says, “I feel better now so I am going to go to work.”
