Kola is a 37-year-old man living in Cambodia with his wife, son, and daughter. He works as both a farmer and motorcycle taxi driver. He likes to listen to the news on the radio and watch boxing on TV.
On November 20, 2015, Kola sustained a fracture of his left index finger from a motor vehicle accident. He went to a private clinic, and surgeons stabilized the fracture site with a pin. However, he still has pain, swelling, and redness in the area. His symptoms prevent him from fully extending his index finger, and he is unable to easily use his left hand.
Kola remembered his friend had a successful fracture repair of his leg at our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), so Kola and his wife visited CSC for further evaluation and treatment.
Kola’s surgeons at CSC recommend an open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) procedure of Kola’s left index finger. An ORIF procedure often involves the insertion of steel rods, screws, or plates to keep a fracture stable during healing. The total cost of the procedure is $411, and covers imaging, medication, supplies, and two weeks of inpatient care. The procedure is scheduled for May 3.
Following recovery, Kola will have restored functionality of his left hand. His work will become much easier once his fracture is resolved.
