Nang is a retired rice farmer. She is 71-years-old and shared that her husband passed away many years ago during the Khmer Rouge era. She has two sons, two daughters, and nine grandchildren. Nang now lives with her third daughter who is a hairdresser. She enjoys listening to the monks pray on the radio and joining ceremonies at the pagoda.
Six years ago, Nang developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her blurry vision and photophobia. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so is not able to go places on her own.
On September 29th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery, and place an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $253 procedure.
Nang says, “After surgery, I hope I can see well enough to go outside by myself and visit the pagoda again.”

Nang underwent cataract surgery in her right eye.
For several years, Nang’s vision had worsened and she was unable to go outside without help. This caused her to lose self-esteem, because she could not help her daughter or clean up the house well. After surgery, she returned to her province with the hope her sight would be improved. She rested for a few days and applied eye drops to aid in healing and decrease the risk of infection. The cataract surgery has improved her vision, and she is relieved she can do housework for her family and go outside by herself. This will improve her life because it is important for her to feel she can support her family.
Nang’s daughter said: “I am so grateful to every person who paid for my mother to have surgery to improve her eyesight. She can feel more useful to our family, visit with neighbors, and visit our community pagoda without fear that she will fall. Thank you to the hospital staff and donors for helping her.”
