Ton is a 68-year-old rice farmer. She has three sons, five daughters, and nine grandchildren. Ton lives with her youngest daughter, who is a garment worker. In her free time, she enjoys visiting the pagoda near her home.
Two years ago, Ton developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her blurry vision and sensitivity to light. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so she is not able to go places on her own.
When Ton learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for three and a half hours seeking treatment. On February 9th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure.
Ton shared, “When I see well again I want to walk around and look at everyone’s faces in my village. And I want to help take care of my grandchildren.”

Ton underwent sight-restoring cataract surgery.
Ton had been a rice farmer her whole life and looked forward to her retirement. With the cataract that limited her vision, retirement wasn’t rewarding because of her inability to do the things she liked to do most. Ton traveled to our medical partner CSC to have her surgery and is thrilled with the results. It may take several weeks before she fully heals, but she can already see so much better. Her life will improve because she can be more independent and useful to her family.
Ton said: “I am so grateful to see better. I can take care of my grandchildren, help around the house, and visit the pagoda by myself without being afraid I will trip or fall. Thank you to the kind people who helped me to have this surgery so I can have a good retirement with my family.”
