Sabel is a five-year-old boy and the third born in a family of four children. Sabel was born healthy, but as he was born his umbilical cord was wrapped around his thigh and knee. Doctors are not entirely certain, but this may have been the cause of a permanent contracture on his leg. Sabel’s parents had not sought out treatment for Sabel and it was not really a concern to them since he was born that way. However in 2018, they were approached by one of the outreach ambassadors from the hospital who shared with them that Sabel could benefit from surgery. Sabel’s mother was happy and decided to travel to come to look for treatment for her son. Sabel had a hamstring contracture release surgery on his left knee to try to straighten his leg and he has also had a serial casting treatment but both have not been helpful to release the contracture. Because his leg has not responded to treatment, doctors recommend that Sabel undergo an above the knee amputation so that he can start walking with the help of a prosthetic. If not treated Sabel’s left leg will lose its muscle function and he will not be able to walk using his leg.
Sabel’s mother says, “I am grateful for all that has been done for my son, please help him so that he will be able to use his leg and walk.”
