60-year-old Joaquim lives in Mozambique with his wife. They have a big family, with four children and six grandchildren. When he isn’t earning money by working on his maize farm, Joaquim keeps very busy building houses and other structures. In what little downtime he does have, he likes to talk with his friends.
For the past three years, Joaquim has been having difficulty urinating—a problem that has caused him considerable pain, weakness, and discomfort. These symptoms are a result of his enlarged prostate gland, a condition that often affects older men.
Fortunately, there is a well-established operation to help people with Joaquim’s problem. On February 28, he will undergo a prostate resection, meaning surgeons will remove a small part of the gland in order to let urine flow more easily through his urethra. Though Joaquim normally could not afford this operation, we can make it possible for him by raising $732. This will fund the cost of his procedure, as well as the accompanying medications, seventeen-day hospital stay, follow-up visit, and roundtrip travel to the hospital.
When he was told that he would be able to receive his operation through the assistance of Watsi’s donors, Joaquim was overjoyed. He is relieved that he will be able to return to his life and family without dealing with the pain his prostate issues have caused him.
