Ky is an 89-year-old grandmother from Cambodia. She has two daughters and six grandchildren. Her husband unfortunately passed away 20 years ago, so Ky now lives with her eldest daughter, who is a vegetable seller. When she is not cooking or helping her daughter care for the grandchildren, Ky enjoys listening to monks chant on the radio.
One year ago, Ky developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her to experience blurry vision and eye tearing. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so she is not able to go places on her own.
When Ky learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for one hour seeking treatment. On August 4th, doctors will perform cataract surgery and place an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $253 procedure.
Ky says, “I hope I can see better so I can take care of myself. I want to go to the pagoda by myself and visit with my neighbors without being afraid I will fall.”

Ky underwent cataract surgery so she can see clearly again.
Ky was increasingly dependent on others due to her poor vision and was depressed. She was glad a relative told her about the eye care at Children’s Surgical Centre, where she traveled to have cataract surgery.
After a night in the hospital, she returned home to rest and apply medicated eye drops to aid in healing. She hopes to be more productive after her eye has healed completely, and looks forward to helping her daughter grow and sell vegetables for extra income.
Ky said, “I am relieved I will see well again. I want to be able to walk to the pagoda by myself without being afraid I will fall. My daughter won’t have to take care of me, and I can visit the market and pagoda by myself. Thank you to the staff who fixed my eye and all the people who helped.”
