Esther is an elderly woman from the Rift Valley in Kenya. She loves practicing mixed farming on her land and has an exceptional passion and zeal for it. Esther is a mother to seven children, who are farmers as well. Her husband also runs a small business in the local community.
On May 3, Esther slipped and fell on muddy ground, causing her to fracture the distal end of her femur, closer to her knee. As a result, she has not been able to tend to her farm. Esther did not immediately seek medical treatment, and preferred attempting to use home remedies before deciding to visit a hospital.
X-rays determined that Esther had officially fractured her femur. She was referred to our medical partner’s hospital, AIC Kijabe Hospital. There, she was seen by the orthopedic team, who recommended extensive surgery to repair the fracture and preserve Esther’s ability to walk.
On May 11, Esther will be undergoing surgery, and our medical partner is asking for $1,451 to fund her procedure. These funds will cover the cost of the surgery itself, as well as seven nights of hospital stay and medications needed throughout Esther’s healing process.
She says, “I want to continue working on my farm and doing chores on my own.”
