Pedro is a seven-year-old second grade student from the Dominican Republic. He lives with his mother, four sisters, and one brother, and enjoys playing sports when he has the energy.
Pedro was born with a cardiac condition called ventricular septal defect, in which a hole exists between the two lower chambers of his heart. Blood leaks through this hole without first passing through his lungs to obtain oxygen, leaving Pedro sick and short of breath.
Pedro is scheduled to undergo heart surgery in the Dominican Republic on May 24 through our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance. Although Gift of Life International is subsidizing the majority of his treatment, Pedro is still in need of $1,500 to cover medications, exams, and hospital expenses.
“I am very hopeful that Pedro’s surgery will go well so that he can play normally with the other children,” says Pedro’s mother.
