Meet Provia, a 58-year-old farmer who lives in Uganda. She unfortunately lost her husband in 2001, leaving her to care for their two children on her own. Provia lost her parents at a young age, denying her a chance to receive an education due to a lack of funding for school fees. She now practices farming to support herself. She grows maize, beans, and potatoes and sells whatever is not eaten to earn money. Now that her children are grown, they both work as small-scale farmers as well.
Over the past 19 years, Provia has been experiencing many troubling symptoms, including profuse sweating at night, neck swelling, shortness of breath, and heart palpitations, even when only walking a short distance. She was eventually diagnosed with bilateral goiter, meaning she has enlarged thyroid glands. To prevent her symptoms from worsening, she must undergo surgery.
Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF), is helping Provia access the treatment that she requires. She is currently scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on July 14th. During this procedure, surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland, enabling Provia to live a more comfortable and pain-free life. African Mission Healthcare Foundation is seeking $252 to fund Provia’s surgery.
Provia shares, “I am helpless…the disease is eating me up. I hope with your support, I will regain my health once I’ve undergone my surgery.”
