Daw Tin is a 60-year-old woman from Burma. She has five children who are all living in different towns and cities with their own families. Two of her grandchildren recently moved to live with her for better educational opportunities.
Daw Tin does not work. Her children send her money on a monthly basis and sometimes send her rice. Although there is no extra money for saving, Daw Tin said the money her children send is enough for her and her grandchildren.
About a month ago, she felt a small mass in her abdomen. She did not experience any pain or discomfort so she ignored it. Two weeks ago she noticed that she bled whenever she carried heavy loads. She was a little worried so she sought treatment. She was told that she had a mass in her abdomen and that it would need to be removed surgically. It was later confirmed to be an ovarian tumor. Due to the tumor, Daw Tin experiences tiredness, bloating, discomfort, and lower abdomen pain.
Daw Tin and her children cannot afford the $1,104 needed to cover the cost of surgery and post-operative treatment.
Daw Tin said, “I just look forward to going home to spend good times with my grandchildren.”
