Thean is a 58-year-old rice farmer from Cambodia. She has one son, two daughters, and two grandchildren, and she enjoys looking after her family when she is not working in the rice fields.
Eight months ago, Thean developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her blurry vision and tearing. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside.
When Thean learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for two and a half hours by taxi seeking treatment. On March 5th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure.
“My daughter feels upset and worried that I cannot see clearly. I hope that I will be able to see clearly after surgery and can sell vegetables at the market,” Thean said.

Thean’s surgery was a great success and her sight has been restored. She will now rest at home and apply eye drops several times per day to prevent infection. Thean’s daughter is very happy that her mother can see everything clearly and she is happy that she no longer has to worry about her mother’s vision loss.
“I am feeling so happy that I can see everything clearly again after my surgery,” Thean shared. “I can recognize people’s faces, and I can help my family harvest rice at the rice field. I can sell the rice at the market and go anyplace I want to by myself.”
