Meet Kabarumba, a 45-year-old woman from Uganda. She lives with her mother. The two women are subsistence farmers, cultivating food crops for their own consumption. This does not leave the two with much disposable income.
For this reason, Kabarumba has been especially troubled by a medical issue that has made it hard for her to work. Ten years ago, she developed a swelling in her left groin region. She did not tell her mother about the swelling until it started giving her pain when she worked or walked for long distances.
Her mother took Kabarumba to a health center, where the younger woman was diagnosed with an inguinal hernia. This means that some of her intestinal tissue has pushed through a weak spot in her abdominal wall and is bulging outwards. Although inguinal hernias can be life-threatening if left untreated, Kabarumba could not afford the surgery that doctors were advising.
Fortunately, though, Kabarumba heard about Watsi’s subsidized healthcare from her parish priest. For $249, we can fully sponsor her hernia repair surgery on August 16, as well as the necessary medications and three-day hospital stay.
“I have been suffering from this condition for so many years,” shares Kabarumba. “I am unable to pay for my surgery and need help.” Let’s make sure her request does not go unanswered.
