Kan is a 13-year-old sixth grader who lives in Cambodia with her parents and younger brother. She enjoys cooking food, drawing pictures, and reading books.
Kan has experienced hearing loss and pain in her right ear for the past three months. She has also had difficulty swallowing and breathing. When she visited a doctor, they discovered hypertrophy of her adenoids and tonsils, and fluid behind the tympanic membrane of both of her ears. Without treatment, Kan’s enlarged glands will continue to limit her breathing, and the pressure in her ears will cause more pain.
Kan traveled three hours with her mother to reach Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC) for treatment. For $201, surgeons will perform an adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy to remove Kan’s enlarged adenoids and tonsils. During the same operation, they will also perform an ear myringotomy with a tympanostomy tube to drain fluid and relieve pressure in her middle ear.
After these procedures, Kan will have improved hearing and breathing. She will be able to return home to her family and lead a healthy childhood.
