Hem is a 69-year-old woman with two sons, three daughters, and seven grandchildren. Hem lives with her husband and their eldest daughter, who is a vegetable farmer. Hem has retired from her work as a rice farmer and now stays at home to take care of her grandchildren.
A year ago, Hem developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her blurry vision that has limited her independence. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so she cannot go places on her own.
When Hem learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), she traveled for four and a half hours seeking treatment. On February 3rd, doctors will perform cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. CSC is requesting $229 to fund her procedure.
Hem shared, “After surgery, I hope I can travel well on my own and see more of my relatives.”

Hem underwent sight-restoring cataract surgery.
Hem’s surgery was a success, and she remained at the hospital until the surgeons were sure she had no complications. She’s now happy to be home in her province. Hem shared that she is relieved her eyesight has returned so she can walk her grandchildren to school and cook for them again. Her family told us that Hem’s help will assure the grandchildren are able to stay in school.
Hem’s daughter said, “Before the operation, it was really difficult for my mother to walk and she could not go anywhere. She is grateful for the operation and the skill of the surgical team, and wants to thank the donors who paid for her surgery so her life can be happy.”
