Orat is a 43-year-old mother of seven. She currently resides in Dadaab, one of the largest refugee camps in the world, as a Somalian refugee.
For two years, Orat has been suffering from lower abdominal pain. The doctors at the refugee camp’s hospital prescribed her with painkillers, however her symptoms did not improve. Neither Orat nor her husband, who is blind and has cancer, has a source of income that can be allocated towards Orat’s medical treatment. Now, two years later, Orat is in urgent need of a total abdominal hysterectomy to treat a malignancy that has been developing.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $756 to fund Orat’s surgery. The procedure is scheduled to take place on June 29 and, once completed, will hopefully spare Orat from future health complications.
“I want to be treated to continue living well and, more so, be there for my husband,” shares Orat.

Orat underwent gynecological surgery.
Orat’s surgery was successful. When Orat first came to the hospital, she was correctly diagnosed with a right ovarian cyst, and the surgeon recommended a laporotomy and a possible total abdominal hysterectomy. When preparing the profile, our medical partner’s site representative mistakenly submitted the wrong diagnosis of a cervical tumor.
During surgery, the surgeons realized the ovarian cyst was benign, and thus there was no need for a total hysterectomy. They performed a right oophorectomy. Orat is recovering well and is no longer in pain and discomfort. Orat was happy with the surgery.
Orat says, “I am grateful for the treatment. God bless you. I hope to be there for my husband who needs me.”
