Voeun is a 70-year-old widow who lives with her daughter. Until it became too difficult for her to bend down, Voeun worked as a rice farmer. She and her husband, who passed away a few years ago, raised one daughter and three sons, and she now also has several grandchildren. Because of poor vision, Voeun spends the majority of her time at home.
Five years ago, Voeun developed a non cancerous growth in her right eye, which causes redness, itchiness, tearing and double vision. This growth typically results from over exposure to sunlight. Now Voeun has difficulty seeing clearly and recognizing faces.
When Voeun learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for two and a half hours to seek treatment. Voeun needs a surgical procedure to remove the growth, and for placement of a graft which will prevent a recurrence of the growth. Children’s Surgical Centre is seeking $225 to fund Voeun’s surgery, medications, supplies and a two day stay in the hospital - Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre - where the procedure will take place on June 6th.
Voeun says: “I hope after surgery my eye will be better, with no irritation or tearing. I want to help my daughter do housework and cook for the children.”
