Susan is a 37-year-old woman from Kenya. She is married and has three children. She works on other people’s farms to provide for her family. Her husband supplements their income with his wages working on construction sites. To send their children to school, they rely on government bursaries and long months of saving.
In July 2017, Susan began to notice irregular gynecological symptoms. She went to the doctor to have a pap smear and a biopsy. Susan was then diagnosed with cervical cancer, and doctors determined that she needed a hysterectomy. If not treated, Susan’s cancer may metastasize.
On September 14, Susan will undergo a total abdominal hysterectomy. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $756 to fund Susan’s treatment. This will cover a four-night hospital stay, labs, medication, and surgeon time. Susan’s family has also subsidized $520 for her treatment. Susan hopes that she will “be able to see her children grow up and be there for [her] husband” in the future.
