Koem An is a 64-year-old retired rice farmer from Cambodia. She and her husband have one son, three daughters, and seven grandchildren. She lives with her husband and her oldest daughter, who is a chef. At home, she likes to listen to the monks pray on the radio.
Two years ago, Koem An developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so she is not able to go places on her own.
When Koem An learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for four and a half hours seeking treatment. On November 15th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help raising $253 to fund her procedure and care.
Koem An shared, “I hope after surgery I can see better, take care of my grandchildren and do housework well.”

Koem An underwent cataract surgery to improve her vision.
Because Koem An and her husband live with a daughter who works all day, it was difficult for her to stay active when she could not see well. She took the advice of her in-laws and had successful surgery to repair her cataract. She will rest at home for several days, and apply eye drops eight times daily to assist in healing. After her vision stabilizes, she can go outside in bright or dim light without fear of injuring herself. This will change her life because older adults who are socially isolated are at greater risk for depression and other serious medical conditions.
Koem An said: “I feel very happy that I can see everything well again. I can take care of myself, help my daughter do housework, and take care of my grandchildren. Thank you to all who helped to pay for my surgery so I can enjoy and live my life again.”
