Mek is a 73-year-old mother-of-three from Cambodia. She has three daughters and three grandchildren, and works at the rice farm during the day to provide for her family.
One year ago, Mek developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her blurry vision, tearing, and photophobia. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside.
When Mek learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for three hours by local taxi seeking treatment. On March 5th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure.
“I hope that I will be able to see clearly again and I can help my daughter with the housework,” Mek shared.

Mek underwent cataract surgery.
Mek’s surgery was quick and successful, and she has now regained sight in her right eye. Mek spent one night in the hospital’s ward and has now returned to her homeland in the province.
She is required to rest and apply antibiotic eye drops multiple times per day to prevent infection. Mek’s daughter feels very happy that her mother is able to see everything and everyone clearly again, unlike before. She is glad that Mek can return to her normal activities and she can go anywhere she wants without having to worry about her.
Mek shared, “I am feeling so happy with my surgery and I can now see everything clearly again. I can help my daughter with the housework, I can look after my grandchildren, and I can go to the pagoda or wherever I want to more easily.”
