Sophean is a 23-year-old university student from Cambodia. He has two sisters and three brothers. In his free time, he likes to read his school books, do research, and watch football on TV.
In October 2014, Sophean was bit by a Malayan pit viper, which caused a Volkmann contracture that permanently shortened the forearm muscles of his left arm. He first came to our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), in November 2016, and surgeons successfully performed a nerve and tendon repair procedure.
Sophean now returns to CSC to continue his treatment. Surgeons at CSC will perform a brachioradialis (BR) to flexor pollicis longus (FPL) tendon transfer, which will restore Sophean’s thumb flexion and help him to use his left hand fully. The procedure is scheduled for July 14, and CSC is requesting $497 to fund the treatment.
