Bakahirwa is a small-scale farmer from Uganda. Bakahirwa is a mother of eight but she unfortunately lost two. She also lost her husband 18 years ago. After her husband’s death, she managed to construct a three-room semi-permanent house to shelter her children and started supporting her family through farming.
For the last 4 years ago, Bakahirwa has been experiencing severe lower back pain. She has been diagnosed with chronic pelvic inflammatory disease. She needs to undergo a hysterectomy, a procedure in which surgeons will remove her uterus.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $239 to fund Bakahirwa’s surgery. On July 21st, she will undergo gynecological surgery at our medical partner’s care center. Once recovered, Bakahirwa will be able to resume her daily activities free of pain and her quality of life will improve.
Bakahirwa says, “With the surgery, I believe I will feel normal again and be able to resume farming. It is only through farming that I am able to sustain and provide good care to my family.”

Bakahirwa underwent a hysterectomy.
Bakahirwa underwent a total abdominal hysterectomy to treat her chronic pelvic pain and pelvic inflammatory disease. Our medical partner shared that her surgery was successful. She was discharged home and is feeling well. She believes she will be able to practice farming with ease since she will no longer be in pain. Having been relieved of the burden, Bakahirwa feels she will live a better life and through hard work, she will be able to develop herself now that she also doesn’t expect considerable support from her children.
Bakahirwa says, “I had lost hope, I never thought I would be myself again. We received quality care and services throughout our stay at the hospital. We thank WATSI for the financial support. I will resume farming as soon as possible.”
