Sroy is a 72-year-old num ansom seller from Cambodia. Num ansom is a sticky rice cake wrapped inside a banana leaf. Sroy has three sons and four grandchildren. In her free time, she enjoys listening to the monks pray on the radio.
Six years ago, Sroy developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her blurry vision, sensitivity to light, irritation, and tearing. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside.
When Sroy learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled there with her son seeking treatment. On June 3rd, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure.
Sroy shared, “I hope I can get well so I can continue selling my Khmer cakes and taking care of my grandchildren.”

Sroy underwent cataract surgery.
Sroy underwent successful cataract surgery at our medical partner Children’s Surgical Centre and is very pleased with the results! She is now resting for a few days and applying eye drops to prevent infection.
Prior to treatment, it was difficult for Sroy to sell her wares outside because she had difficulty seeing, but she is now able to sell rice cakes. She can also see her grandchildren’s faces again and looks forward to cooking for them.
Her son is happy for his mother: “I am relieved my mom can see again, and she can sell again. She was very depressed without a job and is happy to help support the family again.”
