Meet four-year-old Sopha from Cambodia. When Sopha was first born, he received a poorly administered injection in the hospital. “The injection in his right quadriceps caused the muscle to contract and scar,” our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC) shares, “and as he has grown, this has dragged his patella out of place.”
The muscle contracture and tension on the knee have made it painful for Sopha to walk. After hearing about CSC from an organization near their village, Sopha’s mother travelled three hours to bring him to CSC for surgery to fix the contractures in his leg.
$378 will fund Sopha’s quadriceplasty operation, where doctors will surgically release the scarred contracture tissue in his right leg. This will improve his mobility and range of flexion in his knee. Sopha will also receive physiotherapy sessions after his procedure, where he will learn exercise that he can do at home to ensure that his leg regains full function.
Sopha’s mother is very excited for her son’s surgery so that he can return home to their family. “After surgery I hope my son can walk properly again,” she shares.
